White / Gray misconceptions

Gray hair is a fascinating phenomenon. Many think that gray hair is actually gray, but this is a common misconception. In reality, gray hair is a mix of colorless and pigmented hairs that together appear gray. In fact, hair follicles no longer produce melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. This process is determined by genetic factors.

The Science Behind Gray Hair Melanin Production:

Natural hair color is determined by two types of melanin: eumelanin (dark pigments) and pheomelanin (light pigments). Aging Process: As we age, melanin production in the hair follicles decreases, causing hair to lose its color and appear gray or white to you.

How does this all work for us hairdressers when dyeing gray hair?

Are your gray hairs dyed on the outer layer of the hair? No, imagine a hair like this, you have the outermost layer of the hair, the complete cuticle layer, and this cuticle layer is actually transparent. What you see as hair color is the pigment that is inside your hair, that’s why hair color that is supposed to last long has to be dyed into the hair. This permanent hair color is always brought into the hair and that’s why direct dyes, bright colors that come ready out of the tube, don’t really last long and are also less intense. Because their own color pigments cannot be produced within the hair and cannot anchor in the hair with gray hair, so they no longer produce pigment. Instead, they are harder, stronger in diameter, and they are white at the core.

Gray Hair Care Tips

Moisture is Crucial:

Since gray hair is often drier, rougher, and almost bristly, it is important to provide moisture. Use moisturizing shampoos, masks, and conditioners.

Regular Care:

Weekly hair masks can help keep hair supple and healthy.

Avoid Too Much Heat When Drying Gray Hair:

Here’s my ProTip again: use heat protection! Dry with lots of wind and little heat and when your hair is really, really dry, you can style it with a warmer setting. You can also use small helpers, I mean, for example, Velcro rollers, papillotes & round brushes.

Styling Tips for Gray Hair Gentle Styling Products for Gray Hair:

Use products that do not weigh down the hair. Mousse, light creams, leave-in products, and light sprays are ideal.

Natural Look of Gray Hair:

Let your gray hair shine in its natural state. Too much styling can unnecessarily stress the hair. Protection from Yellowing: To avoid yellowing, a silver shampoo can occasionally be used. This helps to neutralize unwanted yellowish tones.

Why Does Gray Hair Turn Yellow?

Environmental Influences:

Smoke, pollution, and chlorinated water can give gray hair a yellowish tint. Most importantly, remember that deposits from your scalp or from your hands are a reason why your hair turns yellowish. Pro Tip: pay attention during the day to how often you run your hands through your hair.

Product Residues:

Styling products and certain shampoos can leave residues that make the hair appear yellowish.

Solution:

Regular use of silver & violet shampoos or special products for gray hair can help remove these residues and keep the hair in its natural, radiant white.

In conclusion, it’s important to know that your gray/white hair can be just as beautiful and versatile as any other hair color. With the right care, a suitable haircut, styling, and an understanding approach to the special properties of gray/white hair, they are a true eye-catcher. Especially unique like you!
